Tow trucks

What you need to apply for a tow truck driver’s licence or tow truck operator’s licence in Mississauga.

To apply for a tow truck driver’s licence you’ll need to submit:

  • A Driver/Operator Licence Application
  • Proof that you’re at least 18 years old
  • Proof of Canadian Citizenship, landed immigrant status or a valid work permit
  • Working knowledge of English
  • Minimum 5 years driving experience after obtaining a full Ontario Driver’s Licence, Class G
  • Ontario driver’s record completed in the last 60 days
  • A driver licence history search from the Ministry of Transportation
  • Original criminal record search completed in the last 60 days
  • A letter of employment from a licensed tow truck owner or company
  • Complete the defensive driving course, sensitivity training course and the tow truck orientation course from the City of Mississauga
  • A photo of you. We’ll take your photo when you apply in person.

You’ll have 90 days from the date your licence was issued or renewed to complete the training courses. We’ll enroll you in the courses once you submit all of your documents and pay your initial fees.

After you’ve successfully completed the training courses, you’ll need to pay the balance of your licence fee before we issue your licence. Courses must be completed every 5 years.

Applying for a new tow truck driver’s licence will cost $798.27. This includes:

Renewing a tow truck driver’s licence

Your tow truck driver’s licence will expire every year on your birthday. A renewal notice will be mailed to the address we have on file for you.

To renew your licence you’ll need to submit the following documents and pay the renewal fee:

  • A Licence Renewal Application
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s licence, Class G minimum
  • Original criminal record search completed in the last 60 days
  • Ontario driver’s record completed in the last 60 days

The fee to renew your licence is $167. If you pay the renewal fee more than 10 business days after your licence expiry date there will be an additional fee of $89.55.

Your licence cannot be renewed more than 60 days after the expiry date.

No new tow truck owner’s licences are being issued at this time.

To renew a tow truck owner’s licence you’ll need to submit:

  • An Owner Licence Application. This must be completed by the business owner, partner, president or an authorized agent.
  • Original criminal record search completed in the last 60 days
  • Articles of incorporation and/or business registration documents, if applying as a company
  • A motor vehicle permit issued by the Ministry of Transportation or a lease agreement, if vehicle is leased
  • A Ministry of Transportation Vehicle Inspection report that shows vehicle has been accepted or a Safety Standard Certificate issued within 60 days
  • Provincial ownership of vehicle
  • Original Certificate of Insurance endorsed by the City of Mississauga that lists each vehicle VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) including:
    • General Liability with minimum $2,000,000 coverage
    • Cargo Liability with minimum $50,000 coverage
    • Motor Vehicle Liability with minimum $100,000 coverage
  • A written statement disclosing any interest in a vehicle pound, yard, repair shop, body shop or other kind of public garage
  • A schedule of rates and charges

Your vehicle must be inspected at the Mobile Licensing Office before your licence can be issued.

Renewing a tow truck owner’s licence

Your tow truck owner’s licence will expire every year on June 30. If you’re a driver as well as an owner, your tow truck driver’s licence will also expire on June 30. A renewal notice will be mailed to the address we have on file for you.

To renew your licence you’ll need to submit the following documents and pay the renewal fee:

  • A Licence Renewal Application
  • Valid Master Business Name Registration, if applicable
  • Original criminal record search completed 60 days of the renewal date
  • Certificate of Insurance endorsed to the City of Mississauga
  • Provincial ownership of vehicle
  • Safety Standard Certificate
  • Tow rate sheet
  • Letter of agreement or permission from a licensed vehicle pound facility, if applicable

The fee to renew your licence is $593. If you pay the renewal fee more than 10 business days after your licence expiry date there will be an additional fee of $89.55.

Your licence cannot be renewed more than 60 days after the expiry date.
