Mississauga history

The library offers several resources to help research local history, including the expertise of our local history librarian, online photo database and access to family records.

Historic images gallery

You can search our library of historical photos including images of people, events, artifacts, buildings and places from the 1860s to the present day.

If you want high quality digital copies or images for purposes other than research or private study, please call 905-615-3500 ext. 3660 or email history.library@mississauga.ca.

Photos are always being added and donations of historic images are welcome.

Local history librarian

Central Library has its own local history librarian who can answer any questions you might have. Email history.library@mississauga.ca to find out more.

Family history

The library offers help researching your family history. The Ancestry Library Edition database can be used to search records, census data, directories, photos and more.

You can only access the ancestry database from a library location.

You can also talk to our family history librarian in the Local History Room at Central Library at the following times:

  • Tuesdays: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Local History Room

Located on the 3rd floor of Central Library, the Local History Room offers in-depth resources for the study of Mississauga’s past, including Indigenous history, European settlement, post-Confederation growth, 20th century suburbanization, and the formation and development of the city.

It also contains the Konrad Collection, which features a number of local archivesbiographies, newspaper clippings, and historical directories and telephone books.

You can also search land records, maps and atlases and information about Mississaugas of the Credit and the Toronto Township.

The Local History Room is open at the following times:

  • Monday, Wednesday and Thursday: 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Local newspapers

Search Mississauga’s local newspapers through ProQuest Historical Newspapers or the Canadiana Public Collections. Papers include:

  • The Port Credit News
  • The Port Credit Weekly
  • The Weekly
  • The South Peel Weekly
  • The Mississauga News
  • The Mississauga Times

Microfilm & Microfiche

Mississauga’s historical newspapers are also available at the library in microfilm. The library has a microform reader that can be used to print as well as scan and save documents to USB.
