Today at Council, Alexis John from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School was virtually announced as the 2019-2020 MiWay Student Ambassador overall program winner. Alexis helped promote the benefits of public transit as part of the tenth year of the program.

“I’m proud to see what these students have accomplished over the past decade as the Ambassador program continues to grow and evolve,” said Geoff Marinoff, Director, Transit. “With the interruption of the school year due to COVID-19, we made adjustments to how we deliver this program so students could still participate virtually and earn prizes. We’re pleased to acknowledge these winners today.”

For the first time, this year’s program meetings were adapted to a digital format so students could take part and engage with one another in a virtual space while practicing physical distancing.

The MiWay Student Ambassador Program is a fun, creative and educational program that provides an opportunity for Mississauga’s high school students to:

  • Educate their school community about the benefits of taking MiWay and earn volunteer hours
  • Network with MiWay staff and other MiWay Ambassadors
  • Helps students build skills, such as leadership, communication and team collaboration, positioning them for success in their future endeavours

Two other teams were also recognized for their high-level of program participation and were each awarded second and third place prizes.

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the City reminds residents to limit travel to essential trips only to help flatten the curve. MiWay remains an essential service to get you to the grocery store, to the pharmacy, to work or to the doctor. The Government of Ontario now recommends those travelling on public transit to wear a non-medical mask or face covering. Customers are reminded to wear a face covering when riding MiWay, keep their distance when possible and wash their hands after every trip.

The 2020-2021 MiWay Student Ambassador Program will kick off this summer and follow a virtual format. For more program information, visit miway.ca/ambassador.
