City Receives Second Accreditation for Demonstrating Excellence in Procurement

The City of Mississauga has received its second accreditation for Outstanding Agency Achievement from the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP). The accreditation recognizes agencies and organizations across North America that have advanced their field by establishing and sustaining strong procurement practices.

As a city, we are committed to making smart and sustainable choices when it comes to purchasing goods and services. These accreditations demonstrate our leadership in fiscal stability and commitment to investing taxpayer dollars wisely,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Strong procurement practices help us drive innovation, manage risks and properly match goods and services. This helps ensure that we not only meet but exceed the expectations that residents have placed on City programs and services.”
The City of Mississauga was the first Canadian municipality and one of the few North American cities to receive this accreditation.
“It is an honour to be the very first city in Canada and recognized as one of the few North American municipalities to receive this accreditation. Acquiring this achievement for the second time is an indication that our practices are leading edge,” said Gary Kent, Commissioner, Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer. “Like many other fields, the procurement profession has evolved over time. Our staff take pride in being well equipped to identify trends and make improvements that work for the betterment of the organization.”
The accreditation is based on a value-driven self-assessment using NIGP’s Accreditation Criteria, which cover 11 categories including mission and strategies, professional development, continuous improvement and procurement technology. Procurement Offices that meet the minimum requirements are accredited for three years.
Receiving this accreditation establishes that Mississauga has sound purchasing principles, policies, and procedures and demonstrates excellence in public procurement.
