Celebrate Recreation, Parks and Seniors’ Month

June is Recreation and Parks month, as well as Seniors’ month. Despite COVID-19 measures, everyone can still celebrate by taking part in activities that promote physical, social and environmental health.

Recreation and Parks Month

Recreation and Parks month is a province-wide movement that promotes the benefits of being active while celebrating parks and recreation services. In Mississauga, it also recognizes how recreation and parks contribute to the quality of life for individuals, families and communities.

This month, why not take some time and try some of these activities:

At-home activities
There are a variety of fun and easy recreational activities that can be done at home. Try playing games, getting crafty or exercising your mind with the 2020 activity booklet for all ages. Challenge yourself to see how many activities you can accomplish in the Activity Bingo. Here are a few more fun activities for the family.

Enjoy a City Park
As City park amenities slowly reopen, it’s worthwhile to get outside this month for some fresh air and exercise. Head out to a local park to walk, run or cycle on a trail, and enjoy the green space. Remember to keep your distance from others and stay 2 metres (6 feet) from others while you’re outside. Find a park in your area.

Seniors’ Month

Seniors’ Month is a province-wide initiative that recognizes the commitment and contributions of older adults to the community. It provides an opportunity to promote programs and services available for older adults. While it’s important for older adults to continue to physically distance themselves from other people during the COVID-19 pandemic, there are ways to stay active and healthy.

Virtual Activities
The City has many ways to stay active at home through your computer, tablet or phone to stay connected. You can show off your yarn crafting projects, join in a coffee chat or take a fitness break. Each activity is offered on a weekly basis. Try an activity.

Arts at Home
Engaging in the arts can help improve your mental well-being. Through Mississauga Culture, you can experience art in multiple ways including going to a concert without leaving home, watching a video of a public art piece in Mississauga or by sharing a positive story about your experience during COVID-19.

Enjoy the Library Virtually
The City’s library’s online resources will be available to Mississauga residents at mississaugalibrary.ca. This includes a collection of digital materials such as eBooks, magazines, downloadable audiobooks and streaming movies, music and television shows, as well as research tools for online learning. If you do not have a Mississauga Library card, you can sign up for a Virtual Card and get instant access to online collections and resources.

Older Adult Expo
Every year, the City hosts an Older Adult Expo to provide an opportunity to learn more about active living, health and wellness, housing and financial services. It celebrates the contribution the older adult population makes in Mississauga. This year, the expo will be taking place in October. Learn more.
